On January 14th, we celebrated the birthday of Dr. Albert Schweitzer, born in 1875 in Alsace. His life’s work of serving others has inspired generations to follow in his footsteps, including the founders of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti, Dr. Larry and Gwen Grant Mellon.
Dr. Schweitzer’s journey was extraordinary:
- A philosopher, musician, and physician, he dedicated his life to serving patients in Lambaréné, Africa.
- In 1952, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his service, using the prize money to care for leprosy patients.
- His philosophy of “Reverence for Life” emphasizes compassion, service, and respect for all living things.
Inspired by Dr. Schweitzer, Larry Mellon read about his work in a 1947 LIFE Magazine article and decided to dedicate his life to providing compassionate healthcare in Haiti. With Gwen’s unwavering support, they built Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti, which has served the Artibonite Region for nearly 70 years.
As we honor Dr. Schweitzer’s legacy, we reflect on the principles that guide our mission:
- Serve others with compassion and respect.
- Do good deeds daily to uplift humanity.
- Share happiness—it multiplies when given freely.
