The place God calls you to
is the place where your deep gladness
and the world’s deep hunger meet.
- Frederick Buechner
My husband James and I first came to St. John’s as a broke and soon-to-be-engaged couple studying at McMaster University thirty years ago. I started seminary two weeks after we were married at St. John’s, was ordained out of this church, and have served at a number of hospitals and parishes through the years since then. Thirty years on, we have slightly less energy, there are a lot of demands on our time, and our grocery bill with three sons is considerable!
We care deeply about supporting the ministry of St. John’s, though, because this parish consistently opens itself to the world’s deep hunger. Its members find gladness in following Christ in this way. What we learned from our parents and grandparents has been reinforced by the people of St. John’s time and time again: to reflect and pray often on how we are using our time, our talents, and our treasures. We know that we are most fully ourselves, who we are created to be, not when we hold on to what we have but when we loosen our grip and trust that, if we give with generosity and gladness, God will sort it out. God has, God does, and God will. We’re grateful.
