On Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, the Church of St John the Evangelist is presenting the Stabat Mater by Giovanni Pergolesi (1710-1736). This work was one of the most popular compositions ever to come from Baroque Italy, and was performed widely in its time. It reflects Mary’s thoughts at the foot of the cross. Much of this music featured in the film "Amadeus".
It is sung by two soloists from St John the Evangelist: Beverly Bronté-Tinkew, soprano, and Mari van Pelt, alto, accompanied by Paul Grimwood, Organist
The Stabat Mater is being presented as part of the Service of Solemn Evensong and Benediction. The choral and plainsong portions of this service will be sung by the Gentlemen of the Choir. The Rev. Andrew Rampton, Rector of the parish, will be the Officiant. There will be incense at theis service.
